Old MacDonald

When our family gathered in Houston this summer for my Mom’s 80th. birthday party those of us with children and grandchildren had to find ways to keep the kids entertained during our stay.  Our family was there for 2 weeks, thankfully there are many family friendly activities in the area.

We took the kids for a day at Old MacDonald’s Farm in Humble, a 10 minute drive from my Mom’s Kingwood home.  Located along the busy road FM 1960, the 15 acre farm opened its gates in the spring of 1991.  It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to about sunset, closing hours vary according to the season.

I used to pass this place every day on my way to work when we lived in Houston, but had never had a chance to go in.  It was a visit that was long over due! The kids and adults had a great time.

Admission is $10 for kids and adults.  Children up to 18 months old are free.  Admission includes all the facilities including the petting barns, pony rides, train ride, pool, and play areas.

You’re welcome to bring your own picnic food that you can eat at one of their many picnic tables.  They also have a small snack bar where you can purchase drinks, ice cream, chips, and other fast food items.

They don’t accept credit or debit cards, cash or checks only.

The farm is home to many farm animals including pigs, cows, horses, ducks, llamas, and more.

We bought a bag of feed from the snack bar for $1 and the kids had a blast feeding the animals.

Wild deer like to hang out at the farm too.  They followed the kids around for a while begging for feed.
There were no signs forbidding you from feeding the deer, and they were too cute and docile so the kids fed them too.

The kids loved the pony rides.  The grooms are patient and match the kids with the right sized pony.

My year old grandson Jett is really into trains at the moment.  He insisted on riding the train 4 times!

There are many different types of playground equipment including the “Fort Apache” play area.  The kids enjoyed them all.  The adults did too!  We each took a turn on the swings!

We didn’t stay all day, it was just too hot, but we did have a great time.  Old MacDonald’s Farm is an inexpensive way to spend a family day out.  I’m sure we’ll be visiting again the next time we’re in town.
