Family Holidays - The Secret to Peace and Harmony

What do you like to do on family holidays? Going to the beach or spending a week in the country? Maybe you enjoy camping or visiting family. Whatever your preference, family holidays are an opportunity for all family members to reconnect and spend time together. This is an opportunity for parents to really talk to their teens and find out what’s going on in their lives. Keeping lines of communication open is important, and a family vacation is a great time to do so. A good relationship with parents is one of the most important factors in keeping teens out of trouble.

Research shows that families who go on vacation together are more likely to eat together and fight less. They don’t watch that much TV because they are involved in joint ventures. The children even reported that their parents behaved differently while on vacation.

While family vacations are a great time to connect with your kids, existing communication problems won’t go away automatically. Especially for teens, it’s important to listen and be flexible. Find out what the kids want to do and eat, and plan accordingly. While even teens need boundaries, it’s important for parents to try to avoid unnecessary confrontation. Explain why you made your choice and give them positive attention.

Kids will love being included in travel plans. If they had a choice, they would most likely choose a theme park or a beach. Sometimes it works well for a teen to take a special friend on a family vacation. While this may add to the burden on parents, teens may be very grateful. Sometimes it also works well when the child is on vacation with the grandparents instead of the parents. Sometimes there is a special connection here that helps children open up about their concerns.

If a teen is uncooperative or misbehaving during a family vacation, try to resolve the issue privately. Teens are all too aware of embarrassment, and exploiting this sensitivity is unnecessary. In fact, you can explain to kids how their behavior embarrassed you, and they in turn can work harder to get along and behave appropriately.

Children are happier on family holidays when they have snacks, drinks and entertainment. Few kids enjoy long rides in the car! Try to provide a personal CD player or handheld video game, and don’t forget to go to the bathroom frequently. Sometimes kids will enjoy riding more if they can help you follow the map. It is also an educational activity for them. If you follow these tips, your family vacation will be a wonderful memory.
